Soundtrack to our Summer 2014 by Willy

Summer is almost here and with it, THAT song that is going to be everywhere for the next few months and by the end of the season we will be praying for it to go away.

It’s the first week of May and I think that by now the charts are already showing us the soundtrack to our summer. So, in no particular order, this is the top 10 of songs that I think won’t miss trips to the beach, pool/house parties, late nights and everything we like to do in the summer:

1. Jennifer Lopez – I Luh Ya Papi [ft. French Montana] (Hot100 Peak: 77)
This song is so catchy! The chorus is hard to ignore and probably will never leave your head after listening to it. Jennifer Lopez was promoting it on Jimmy Kimmel last week and the way she tried to explain what the song was about killed me! (watch HERE).

2. Pharrell - Come Get It Bae [ft. Miley Cyrus] (Hot100 Peak: 102)
This song is MY JAM right now! Pharrell is a genius, a musical genius, and to me everything he does is perfect. It will be released to radio in the US on May 20th but he already performed it on the iHeartRadio Awards and last Monday on The Voice (watch below), so promotion for it has started. It's fun, it's catchy, it’s a sick beat; I can't get enough of it.

3. Chromeo – Jealous (I Ain’t With It). (Hot100 Peak: N/A)
I think their set on Coachella this year was fun! Their new sound is more pop-driven and it works for them. “Jealous” is very upbeat, it makes you want to move and that’s why I think it works just fine as a summer anthem. Also I think a lot of people can relate since summertime is all about both, love and heartbreak.

4. Iggy Azalea – Fancy [ft. Charli XCX] (Hot100 Peak: 4)
Iggy Azalea is one to watch this summer. Her album just came out and it’s really good! Also with this song (or “Problem”) you won’t be able to scape her. The song is really good and the music video brings a lot of memories since it was inspired by the cult movie “Clueless”. It could easily become this year’s “I Don’t Care (I Love It)”, except a lot better.

5. Ed Sheeran – Sing (Hot100 Peak: 14)
This Pharrell-produced song is currently on replay on my iPhone. I think it is sooo good! It is not the kind of sound one would think Ed Sheeran would come out with but it totally works. Once again, Pharrell did an amazing job. Its fun, its catchy, it’s a dare (if you want to learn all the lyrics) and everybody could sing/dance to it. I can hear it being everywhere this summer.

6. Tiësto – Wasted [ft. Matthew Koma] (Hot100 Peak: N/A)
The second single of Tiësto’s upcoming “A Town Called Paradise” album, due June 16th, was just released last week and its ready to make an appearance on the charts and your parties this summer. It reminds me a little of M83’s “Midnight City” but in a good way. I think it has potential. Also, what would it be of the summer without DJ’s?

7. Calvin Harris – Summer. (Hot100 Peak: 18)
I am only including this song on my list because its more of the same commercial EDM I wish would go away and because its called “Summer,” so there’s a huge chance it will be everywhere whether we like it or not.

8. Katy Perry – Birthday (Hot100 Peak: 29)
Well, this song isn’t “California Girls” so I don’t think it could be the official song of the summer this year but people worship Katy Perry everywhere apparently, so who knows? Also, it’s the only fun song on “PRISM” hence I’m sure it will be played over and over again everywhere. The video is fun too; this woman is like a pop music machine.

9. Ariana Grande – Problem [ft. Iggy Azalea] (Hot100 Peak: 3)
This song just came out and I was very surprised the first time I listened to it. I wasn’t expecting Ariana Grande to have a hit this summer but Iggy Azalea totally made the song awesome! And let’s be honest, if she weren’t featured on the song, it wouldn’t be as good. The sax hook is perfect, the lyrics, Big Sean on the chorus, everything about this song screams SONG OF THE SUMMER 2014.

10. Lana del Rey – West Coast. (Hot100 Peak: 17)

I have always said that in order to listen to Lana del Rey, I think, one has to be in a very particular mood but I think she could totally take over the summer with this song, even though it isn’t uptempo.

OTHERS:
I think these songs could also be a part of the soundtrack to this year's summertime, again, in no particular order:

*US Billboard Hot 100 Chart Peak up to May 8th 2014.
